Saint Patrick's Day is almost here. To most, the holiday evokes memories of leprechauns, four leaf clovers, and pots full of chocolate coins.
The MEA Environmental club would like to give a new meaning to this green holiday--green living! You don't have to be an environmentalist, a tree hugger, or a nature lover to join in on this fun challenge. Pick up a checklist from the PALs Lab, Computer Lab, Library, Parent Room, or Front office (or print out your own!) to get started. Click here for the tooth paste recipe, and here for the all-purpose cleaner recipe (referenced below).

Written by environmental club founder and presdient Megan Phelps Conventional cleaners are chock full of hazardous chemicals. Many are proven to cause cancer and more. The federal government turns a blind eye to many of these chemicals, leaving you as the consumer on your own. Written by environmental club founder and president Megan Phelps Conventional toothpaste is pretty tough on the earth, not to mention our bodies! It's full of sodium laurel sulfate, glycerin, fluoride, triclosan, and synthetic flavorings. These compounds impede whole-body health, and prevent saliva from remineralizing your teeth to prevent cavities. Yuck! To make matters worse, conventional toothpaste is packaged in a lot of plastic. Luckily, we have the answer. A few of them, actually. These super-simple, toxin-free recipes will have you brushing naturally in no time! Beware: these toothpastes are not what you're used to! They might feel a little chalky or taste salty at first. Adjust ratios as needed (tips below). Zero Waste Toothpaste Recipe (from Trash is for Tossers) 3 tablespoons coconut oil 1 1/2 tablespoons baking soda 25-30 drops Organic food grade peppermint essential oil Mix all three ingredients in a glass dish. To use, scoop out a little bit with a spoon and put it onto your toothbrush. Add more or less peppermint or coconut oil depending on your textural preference. (Video below.) Tooth powder (adapted from Zero Waste Home) 2 tb baking soda 1/8 ts white stevia powder a few drops essential oil of your choice Place in a parmesan shaker and tap gently onto toothbrush to use. Alternatively, you can place it into a mason jar and dip a wet toothbrush into it. Too Salty? Here are some ways to make these recipes your own:
